I was just 6 when I heard Bob Dylan for the first time. There was an indescribable quality to his songs that resonated deep within me and kept lingering in my ears. Years have passed since then but my captivation with Bob Dylan has remained steadfast and unwavering. Dylan turned 82 on the 24th of May. So I am dedicating a few words to the iconic legend himself.
Bob Dylan’s impact goes well beyond boundaries and greatly inspires musicians across the world. Unlike the Beatles, Bob Dylan never traveled to Rishikesh, nor did he follow any spiritual leaders in India. But still, Dylan enjoys a substantial fan base in India.
As a child, I vividly recall that nearly every other house in Shillong was home to a musician. Bob Dylan’s legendary songs such as ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ or ‘Knocking on Heaven’s Door’ still reverberate in my memory from those days. In my teenage years, I experienced live performances of Lou Majaw, hailed as the Bob Dylan of India, right in Shillong. The profound influence of Bob Dylan in the region was evident, culminating in a momentous event in 2007. A staggering 1,730 guitarists congregated in the vast expanse of Polo Grounds to collectively perform Dylan’s masterpiece ‘Knocking on Heaven’s Door.’ The scale and enthusiasm of the event truly showcased the deep-rooted obsession with Bob Dylan in Shillong.

Why just Shillong, the resonance of Bob Dylan’s influence extends even here in Calcutta. Kabir Suman, a prominent figure in the contemporary Bengali music scene, stands out for his poignant and socially conscious songwriting. Suman has been influenced by numerous musicians from the West and East, Bob Dylan is one of them. He adopted Dylan’s ‘Blowing in the Wind’ and composed “Kotota poth parole tobe manush chena jay”. Additionally, Suman’s song “Ganwala” finds its inspiration in Dylan’s iconic “Mr. Tambourine Man.”
Besides Suman another renowned singer-songwriter, Anjan Dutta has been greatly influenced by Bob Dylan. Like Dylan, Dutta is celebrated for his exceptional storytelling skills and his ability to weave personal experiences and societal matters into his songs. One of Dutta’s notable compositions, ‘Alibaba,’ bears the unmistakable influence of Dylan, particularly in terms of its lyrical content. With its poetic verses and introspective tone, the song explores the complexities of the life of a little child and the fleeting nature of existence just like Dylan’s ‘Hard Rain’.
In addition to their unique styles of presenting songs like Bob Dylan another common characteristic of Suman and Dutta is their inclination to question societal norms and voice dissent through their music. Both artists possess the remarkable ability to utilize music as a powerful medium for social commentary, tackling issues like inequality, injustice, and the complexities of human emotions. Dylan’s influence can be heard in the music of artists like Indian Ocean, Rabbi Shergill, and Prateek Kuhad, among others.
